This is the front cover for my college magazine, used for marks in my preliminary task which go towards my coursework grade. The fonts I have chosen work well with the theme of the magazine, for an audience of teens. I think the title would attract people to buying the magazine because it is cool and funky. I've used too many colours on the front cover, so this is something I need to think about when doing my final task. Just sticking to a maximum of 3 colours so there isn't too much going on, it almost puts the buyer off the magazine. I also feel like the writing around the models are too scattered, magazines usually have more going on but stick to simple colours, when coming to design my music magazine, this is something I will think about. This is the first time I've used photo shop properly, other than in the induction task we were set, so when I get round to doing the final task, my skills for photo shop will have developed with practise so the magazine will be better and more attractive.
This is my contents page for my college magazine, set for the preliminary task. Ive kept to the same colours as i did for the front cover, red, white and blue. I included 4 more images that i got from google. From conducting this practice piece i have learnt that for my final task i need to think about a background as well as what is going to go on the page. I think that the events/gig listings are a good feature of the magazine as it is not aimed at too narrow an audience; most teenagers like to know what's happening where. Also I think the information will appeal to my audience as it collaborates information from lots of sources and presents them to people that may not be interested in the original source e.g. someone who may not know of certain artists/bands may now become aware of them. Teenagers are often experimenting and trying new things therefore the ease in which they can find out about new experiences should please them. I think there is vast room for improvement on my contents page. I think the mix of the pictures with the simplicity of the text makes the page lack identity. A simple contents page is a very generic feature of magazines however to be effective it needs a professional finish, often achieved by the correct font and layout. The layout of my contents page lacks style and the pictures are pretty much all for the same thing; they are all linked to the magazine but for a college magazine, music may not be the only thing an individual student is into. I think one image alone may have been more effective. I do think the images serve some purpose though as they act as teasers as to whats inside the magazine which may entice readers to view more.
